The solo project of Deerhunter second fiddle Lockett Pundt, Lotus Plaza’s Spooky Action at a Distance is perhaps 2012’s biggest surprise thus far. Where Pundt’s 2009 The Floodlight Collective sounded overly hazy and unsure of itself, Spooky Action is the sound of an artist discovering his strengths and playing to them for 45 straight minutes. And that strength is crafting swirling, melodic, guitar-based indie-rock songs. Kranky just released the towering “Monoliths”, a prime example of just such a track. Going on record here, Spooky Action at a Distance is every bit as excellent as anything Deerhunter compadre Bradford Cox has released as Atlas Sound.
