I’m always a sucker for barn burning, gut punching, shit-kicking roots rock. I don’t post all that much of it simply because the good stuff’s just a lot harder to find in 2012 than, say, 1997. Honestly, there’s not of bands out there that share the edge or panache of early Wilco, Jayhawks, Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today, or late 90s Steve Earle. That’s why it was so refreshing when I came across San Diego’s The Howls late last week, and it’s why Rocky Ground, their debut, has been on blast all weekend. This record is filled with the sharp songs and the Cosmic American sonics of those old favorites. Check out the shout along climax of “Vacation” or the hardcore folk of “Crime” for (120) proof.
