A San Francisco Treat

Last month I got myself caught up with Thee Oh Sees’ two amazing 2011 LPs – Castlemania and Carrion Crawler/The Dream.  Besides dominating my listening ever since, these two records have acted as a gateway (maybe, ugh, a Golden Gate-way?) into the vast array of formidable emerging talent coming up within the San Francisco borders.  It’s no secret that San Fran has been a breeding ground over the past few years for young bands mining classic garage and psyche sounds for inspiration.    This collection, which mixes tracks I’ve known for a while with a whole bunch that I’ve come across recently, is meant to act as a primer of the city’s current talent pool.  Though not connected by one particular sound per se, many of these bands and artists obviously share an affinity for vintage recording techniques and classic psyche/pop song structures.  Huge props have to go to the SF-based Positive Destruction blog (itself named after this articleon the scene), which I recently found and from whose back pages I copped a lot of these songs.  If you’re in the know, please leave a comment letting me know what other SF acts I should be listening to.  I can’t get enough of this stuff right now.
