Last week I caught the Okkervil River/Titus Andronicus show at Terminal 5, both of whom, as expected, were awesome. Since we got there early though, we were treated to a nice surprise by openers Future Islands. Before they played a note my buddy quipped that the lead singer, Samuel T. Herring, looked like he “just got off work at Chase” in response to his clean cut, conservative looking tucked-in collared shirt and dress pants. But man, once the band started playing, Herring transformed completely into a manic, slightly deranged frontman. It was an intensely captivating performance, synth and bass driven art-pop with Carey Mercer-like vocals. I immediately picked up their 2010 LP In Evening Air, which I’ve spun a few times since and am really getting into. Today Stereogum premiered “Before the Bridge”, which is set for release as a 7” single from Thrill Jockey in the coming weeks (7/19, to be exact). Check it.
