[mp3] Dirty Beaches – “The Singer”

Dirty Beaches, the recording project of Alex Zhang Hungtai, has nothing but momentum going for him as we near the 3/29 release date of the singularly atmospheric new LP Badlands.  We’ve already heard two free tracks from the album – “Sweet 17” and the aching “Lord Knows Best”, which Hungtai guest-posted about here on PHW last month.  Since then though there have been a handful of noteworthy new tracks and newsbits to surface from Dirty Beaches.  “The Singer” is a cover of a Johnny Cash song (also famously reworked by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds) and is the A-Side of an upcoming split 7” from Soft Power Recordings.  It’s backed by “Gone to Hell Come Friday”, which has since been dedicated to the late Trish Keenan of Broadcast.  Additionally he’ll be releasing a limited 7” in the U.K. via Italian Beach Babes featuring a cover of The Stooges “No Fun”, which you can stream here.  Today Pitchfork posted an interview with Hungtai and labeled Dirty Beaches a “Rising” act.  And finally, there was a stark video recorded recently by Yours Truly of Hungtai playing a solo piano version of “Golden Blonde”, a song off one of Dirty Beaches’ earlier mini-LPs that you can watch here.  Badlands will be released by Zoo Music.  Phew.
